Background of SWFL ASTD P-I-E Project

Teacher Supply Drive for Sunshine Elementary

Traditionally, many school teachers supplement their training supplies given by their school district by paying for additional supplies out-of-pocket. This is especially true of those who work in underprivileged areas,

To help offset these personal costs on a limited basis, the Southwest Florida Chapter, American Society for Training and Development, began its program to assist school teachers in their endeavors back in the year 2000. Titled “Partners-In-Education,” the idea of assisting fellow teachers was an easy transition for local ASTD members as many of them were formerly school teachers themselves.

Working through the school districts, the Chapter would select a given school to support with a fall fund drive. Teachers were given the opportunity to list what supplies they would like us to purchase and our committee would encourage other members to contribute the requested supplies or provide a cash donation.

In some cases, we’ve even supplied nearly 50 classic books for a school’s summer remedial reading program.

The program has been very successful. This fall our membership raised nearly $400 in school supplies, which were turned over to the Michigan International Academy of Fort Myers.

Project Chair is Lisa Brady, Human Resources Generalist for Lee County Electric Cooperative, who has been a member of ASTD for many years.

Among the schools we’ve supported: North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts, Tice Elementary School, Fort Myers; Heights Elementary School, Fort Myers; Sunshine Elementary School, Lehigh; Dunbar High School, Fort Myers.

Our Local ASTD Chapter is once again sponsoring a Teacher Supply Drive. (We’re currently selecting an appropriate school.)

As trainers, we know the cost of supplies has indeed gone up. We also are all aware that most teachers put a lot of their own money into their classroom. Here is your chance to help!

Bring your donations to next month’s ASTD meeting on September 17 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Ft. Myers. If you cannot make it, please call either Helen Hunter at 561-7208 or Duane Rice at 278-2653. We will make arrangements to pick up the items. If you would like to make a cash donation, we will be buying a gift certificate for the school with any money donated.

Here is a list of supplies we need:

• Copy paper – bright colored paper, neon colored paper and regular white

• Sticky notes – all shapes/sizes/colors; whether pop-up/stacks/or other

• Construction paper (large and small sheets)

Our Local ASTD Chapter this year is sponsoring a Teacher Supply Drive for Sunshine Elementary school in Lehigh. As trainers, we know the cost of supplies has indeed gone up. We also are all aware that most teachers put a lot of their own money into their classroom. Here is your chance to help!

Because the teachers’ needs are so great, we’re adding an attachment to the newsletter (following page 9) with their complete wish list. Whatever you can do to help, we all appreciate your efforts.

In fact, here is an excerpt from an e-mail sent by the school’s teacher drive coordinator – Ms. Jan Licina:

“Let me tell you once again how much we appreciate being adopted by ASTD.”

Bring your donations to both this and next month’s ASTD meetings (September 17 and October 15) at the Hilton Garden Inn in Ft. Myers. If you would like to make a cash donation, we will be buying a gift certificate for the school with any money donated.

If you cannot make either meeting, please call either Helen Hunter at 239/561-7208 or Duane Rice at 239/278-2653. We will make arrangements to pick up the items.
